    years of EV's

At Mitsubishi Motors, we are working hard to tackle problems such as the prevention of pollution and global warming, and the need to diversify energy resources and reduce dependence on petrol. That's why we've given priority to the development of zero-emissions electric vehicles (EVs).

We have four decades of experience to call on. First developments started in the late 60s and resulted in the first Mitsubishi Motors-built EV in 1971. Called the Minica EV, it was powered by a traditional lead-acid battery, and Mitsubishi provided power companies and the government with around 150 vehicles for tests. A series of ever-more sophisticated Mitsubishi EVs followed through the 1980s and '90s. The biggest strides have been possible only since lighter, more efficient lithium-ion batteries arrived at the beginning of the new century, and these power the i-MiEV.

The joint venture company Lithium Energy Japan, set up by Mitsubishi Motors, Mitsubishi Corporation and GS Yuasa began production of Lithium-ion batteries to power i-MiEVs in 2009.

We were the first in the world to start production of a full-fledged mass production EV when we began production of the i-MiEV in June of 2009. The model was introduced a month later in the Japanese market. As of the end of October 2010, 3,000 i-MiEVs have been bought by environmentally conscious individuals and businesses nationwide. We also started production of left-hand drive European-spec i-MiEVs in October 2010, and we are steadily proceeding with our global rollout of EVs. Underlying its popularity, we manufactured the 5,000th*1 unit of our i-MiEV on November 23, 2010.

With the i-MiEV, Mitsubishi's EVs have evolved from merely practical transport to chic, fun-to-drive urban cars. We believe they will attract young, fashionable, but environmentally concerned drivers.

*1: Does not include EV production for PSA Peugeot Citroën.
